Unit Plan

The Cell Cycle

Objectives

In this unit, students will be introduced to the cycles of a cell. Students will:

  • identify and describe the three main stages in the cell cycle.
  • identify the changes and events that occur in cells before and during mitosis.
  • identify the changes and events that occur in cells during meiosis.
  • differentiate between mitosis and meiosis.
  • create a model to demonstrate the process of mitosis or meiosis.

    (diploid or haploid)

    diploid

    haploid

    Performance Assessment:

Students will choose either mitosis or meiosis, and create a two-dimensional model of the process. The model can be constructed on a poster board or cardboard base. Students are not to draw the processes, but instead use other materials such as string, popsicle sticks, and pipe cleaners to create the models. The phases and cell structures need to be labeled. Along with the model, have students write a fictional children’s story for the different phases of the process with character names and a plot. The story should be typed if possible, double-spaced, creative, and include one paragraph per phase.

    Performance Assessment Scoring Rubric:

    Points

    Description

    5

The student meets all five of the requirements:

    • The model is accurate for the process chosen.
    • The phases and cell structures are labeled correctly.
    • The student uses materials that represent cell structures clearly.
    • The story creatively presents the events that occur during the process.
    • The story includes one paragraph per phase of the process.

    4

The student meets four of the requirements.

    3

The student meets three of the requirements.

    2

The student meets two of the requirements.

    1

The student meets one of the requirements.

    0

The student demonstrates lack of understanding or does not attempt to complete the assignment.
